Heavenly Herbs (Spagyric Elixir for Deep Sleep)
stone meteorite dust and colour pigments extracted from sleep-inducing medicinal plants on glass, metal shelf
2024, 60×42 cm
Over the course of two summers, the artist gathered sleep-inducing medicinal plants from her home region, the Turku archipelago, and around her studio in Berlin (rosebay willowherb, chamomile, field horsetail, imperforate St John's-wort, valerian, raspberry, common hop, meadowsweet, small-leaved linden, common St John's wort). Using pigments extracted from these herbs and dust ground from stone meteorites, she created a painting on glass that depicts a spagyric herbal medicine for sleep.
Spagyrics is a method developed by Swiss alchemist Paracelsus during the Middle Ages that involves preparing concentrated medicinal extracts from plants. The recipes took into account the favourable celestial position of the planet that rules each medicinal herb.

Place about two ounces of finely ground herb in a clean, dry jar and pour in the clear fluid you have collected and filtered. Beginning the operation when the planet ruling the herb is in a powerful position will assist you in your Work.
